Anthias are hermaphroditic and all of them start out as female. When a male dies or if a male is part of a terriorty of a school of female Anthias, the dominate female will transition sex and become a male.

This species displays sexual dimorphism, the female is orange with a streak of fushsia color below the eye. The male is colored red on its head, dorsal fin, tail, pectorial fins, and pelvic fins and has a hot red streak below the eye extending across its pectorial fins. The male also has a very distinctive enlogated third ray of its dorsal fin.

Lyretail Anthias grow to about 5 inches long and should be kept in a 120 gallon aquarium or larger, and in schools with only one male in the aquarium. They prefer the open waters columns during the day, but still need rocks and places to rest or hide in when desired.

They will eat frozen brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods, but do require live foods, like copepods and amphipods to meet their planktivore requirements. They will eat the live food as it passes by in the current in your aquarium.
